“The fever tree”, which has the rare virtue of purifying the environment, was discovered in Australia in 1792 by the French naturalist Julien Houtou de La Billardière, who accompanied La Pérouse and wrote the account of the expedition. The aborigines used the leaves to heal wounds and feverish states. Its introduction in Europe dates back to 1856 when commercial production began in the Australian state of Victoria. By absorbing large amounts of water and releasing exhalations with strong anti-infective power, eucalyptus was tasked with drying out and purifying malaria-infested swampy regions, hence the name Eucalyptus salubrious.
